My brother and his wife just had another little baby boy! So that’s why I’ve not been around much
Hopefully I’ll have pictures up tomorrow night, and I promise I’ll get back into regular blogging just as soon as I can pull myself away from tiny fingers and toes!
I love the work of Katsushika Hokusai, as you may have already noticed. I found a fantastic resource today - http://www.katsushikahokusai.org - which displays his complete works.
One print in particular caught my eye:

I loved the dynamic waves and was inspired to attempt and produce my version.
I quicklytraced (again, I’m a bad girl) the basic outline and, much like the last wave painting, I filled in the waves with felt tip.
Here, I started to fill in over the felt tip with watercolour, and roughly plastered (pretty accurate verb for this!) a wash in over the sky. I was unhappy with the colour of the sky, but waited until it dried to try and fix it.
I fixed the sky, and then made a huge mistake with the hills to the left of the picture. I didn’t want to have the level of detail which was in the original picture, as I felt it would distract from the waves. So, hills need fixing….
However! I did the waves all purty! I decided the white foam was too much of a contrast in the inside ‘sloping’ part of the wave, so applied a green wash and highlighted with blue. I think it looks cool, but it probably won’t appeal to everyone.
You might also notice my wee birdies have disappeared from the sky =\(I still need to paint them in tomorrow)
The finished thing! (for the moment)
I fixed the hill with blue, dark blue, and black. I’m not entirely happy with the hill but it’s an improvement on the previous incarnation! I also highlighted the foam on the waves and some parts of the boat with black.
Not too bad for a rush job!
